"Death Valley" Columbus, Indiana
Today known as "Mill Race Park"
| "Sylvia's World and the Spirit of the Tree" by Sylvia Wells Worton tells about Death Valley located alongside the banks of the White River on the edge of Columbus, Indiana. This book is about gratitude for the blessings of family and friends in the struggles that are so much a part of life. It is also about the reality of extreme poverty in this place in southern Indiana called Death Valley. The story is told from the perspective of someone who was born there and lived there for thirty-one years, until the neighborhood was removed in the early 1960s. Today, Death Valley has been replaced with Mill Race Park, lots of green grass, walking trails, picnic shelters making a quiet serene place for the community of Columbus. Still standing in a nice grassy area near the White River is a large tree with a yellow ribbon tied around it which had its roots planted as a small twig several years ago by young Sylvia Wells Worton in her years growing up in Death Valley.
